NYTimes Style article

In case you were the only one to miss it the New York Times had a recent Style article Over the Shoulder, Over the Top about high end designer bags.

I'll never be able to drop $1K for a bag, as much as I love them, but it is an interesting article, covering why some women buy such extravagant items even though they know the price is outrageous.

I would probably be inclined to buy a pricey bag if I knew I could get lots of use out of it, but I am just so finicky that a bag I love today I can't stand tomorrow. Plus my day bag gets so baged up on my commute that an expensive bag just wouldn't be practical. But a girl can dream of someday right?

My favorite quotes from this article:

  • "A few years ago it was shoes. Last year it was jeans. This is the year of the handbag."

  • One reason for the rise of these bags is that the rest of fashion has moved toward a more dressed-down look, so that even jeans may be appropriate for a dinner party.

  • "A bag is sort of like a portable house. It represents you."

  • "For some women, finding the right bag is as important as oxygen."

  • "I know the price of fuel is up, but if I'm trying to decide between a tank of gas or a great designer bag, I'm going to walk and carry that bag."

In related new I actually had my first spotting of a Chloe Paddington bag yesterday on the arms of a woman walking into the Gap in Harvard Square. I wasn't able to get close enough for a good look without looking sketchy, but I get a good view of the paddlock as I walked by her.

What is the most you have ever spent on a handbag? For me it was $150 for a black leather Coach bag a few years ago. I know that's a drop in the bucket campared to the bags in this NYTimes article, but I was quite happy with my purchase.

I bought an orange Cynthia Rowley handbag on sale last year for $175. I fell in love with the bag, so tt was totally worth it. I don't think I'd ever feel comfortable spending $1K or more on a purse.

If I could spend $1K on a bag, I probably would, but then again, I don't know. I am so indecisive - I'd probably change my mind about the bag after it was bought.

The most I've ever spent on a bag is $400, on a burberry barrel bag in the signature nova check. I'd had my eye on it for years, saved up, and bought it. I don't regret that purchase - its a classic, I carry it often, and it matches almost everything.

Most I ever spent on a bag was $70 Canadian and it was on a Jane Shilton bag from England which I have only used twice. I find if I bags which are way more inexpensive - i use them more. Is it because I know they are disposable and I take more of a risk with their welfare? I think so.

The most I've ever spent was $170 for a gorgeous print Cole Haan purse that I immediately fell in love with. I carried it for a week with the tags tucked inside, making sure I liked it enough to keep it.

I was thinking that the print was too wild to match anything with (was a black-or-brown-bag- only girl till then), but I found I created outfits around the purse and it really did match a lot. I love that purse.

It taught me that as long as I LOVE something, I will always love it and should buy it.

Same with my $100 green shoes. :)

I love expensive bags as much as I love expensive shoes, but the thing is I get bored of my stuff too easily. I can drop like $200 on a fabulous handbag and then get sick of it like a month later. I guess for me to spend that kind of money on something, I need to feel like I can wear it with everything (and I mean everything). I have this monogrammed guess bag that fits that purpose; it's black, so it can be dressed up, but the material is such that it can also be dressed down. I think that bag cost me all of $50 and that was 2 years ago.

Previously I spent $100 on a Via Spiga bag @ Marshall's 2.5 years ago. And it was great, (trendy and timeless a western-y hobo) but I wanted something with more structure so I bought a coach bag for $350 (hey i hear they are durable) it is the perfect bag until I can get a kelly bag. But since I doubt I'll ever drop that much on a bag until I'm Oprah (although it looks like Dooney and Bourke has something pretty great looking, but it doesn't seem to be in any of my stores)

$1500 (including tax) on my black Chloe Paddington. My first over $1K bag and perhaps not the last. I also have an assortment of Gucci, Coach, Dooney and Bourke and Escada bags.

I *love* bags - they're my weakness. My most expensive to date is a burgundy Celine Boogie bag I bought last year ($1150.00). I love the simple lines, and it will look good for several years to come. I'm about to buy a second one - Neiman Marcus has it in a gorgeous bottle green, my favorite color!

the most I've spent on a handbag was around $3000 for a mink gucci clutch from the autumn/winter 2004 collection, tom ford's final collection for the house. the clutch has a double-headed-dragon jewelled embellishment on the front flap, so the bag is definitely very luxe. in fact, the gentleman that sold it to me compared it to a piece of jewellry.

the bag must sound gaudy, given that it's mink with a large brooch-like piece on the front, but it is about the same size as a judith lieber miniaudiere, so the overall effect is actually quite understated.

I've used it with everything from jeans to skirts to cocktail dresses. upon first glance, it may not seem versatile, but then, that is inherent challenge in picking a visually interesting bag: trying to (appropriately) use it on as many occassions as possible.

the bag was featured in gucci's autumn/winter 2004 advertising campaign: daria werbowy was holding a grey one while nestled between two men.

in addition, it was created in very limited supply: the gucci store in toronto informed me that approximately 12 were available in canada.

given the unique visual attributes, the designer, the fashion house, the media attention, and the limited availability of the bag, I think it was a worthy investment.

The most expensive bag I bought was my second birkin bag, $8,000. It was hard to pay that amount considering my first bag cost $5,000, but I did not have to wait for it. I have never bought a bag for under $ 1200...I have a hard core obsession with all bags. Hermes being my absolute favorite!

I just purchased a Chanel Medallion black cavier bag. It was $1700 with tax. I LOVE IT and feel so chic.

I also have 8 Louis Vuitton bags I have been collecting since the 90's.
